Here’s an exclusive interview we did with C.R.S.T, four of the leading producers in the latest genre to come out of electronic music, Future Garage.

So how’s things in the world of C.R.S.T?

C.R.S.T

All good! Got a load of stuff coming out in the next couple of months with various labels, we’ll be playing out quite a bit and generally keeping as busy as possible. Just done a little round of promo shows for Bigger Than Barry and released a digi-only E.P. with them. We have an E.P. out on No Hats No Hoods within the next month or so and some shows with them coming up and also a Digi E.P. on Car Crash Set coming out in early April.

How did C.R.S.T come together?

C.R.S.T

Well Tony Blitz, Chesus & JDS all come from Barry and have known each other since early teens and have always had a similar interest in music so its only natural that we joined forces eventually. Rodski is from a small village called Ystrad Mynach but met up with Chesus through working in Size? shoe store (Cardiff). Che & Rod started to play at a few parties together and shortly became ‘Chesus & Rodski’ . One day we decided to all get together in the studio and its gone on from there…

How would you describe to unknowing readers what genre you produce / Dj?

C.R.S.T
Haha,that’s a good one. We don’t really just make one type of tune but they would generally described as anything between garage,house and “future-garage” whatever that means,we just try to make stuff that works on the dancefloor and for listening at home equally well, the sort of stuff you listen too and then it makes you wanna go out.

What’s it like being at the forefront of such a fuse of genre’s?

C.R.S.T

Umm well we didn’t know we were, but at the moment it seems like people are interested in what we are doing so it’s cool. Its always good to get a random email off someone saying they’ve heard one of our tunes out or on a radio show etc.. feeds the drive to make more and so far its helping a lot!

What is influencing your current productions?

C.R.S.T

We are influenced by all sorts of genres of music & producers equally. We seem to be going through a phase of trying to create the old speed garage and 2-step sound with a fresh feel, so I guess producers like Tuff Jam, Steve Gurley, Dem 2, Todd Edwards, MJ Cole as well as newer producers like Mosca, Doc Daneeka, Martyn, Zomby and Burial. Thats just Scratching the Surface!

What’s your plans for 2010?

Well we are taking a lot more bookings and like we said, we have a load of releases coming out in the next few months, including the ones mentioned before plus stuff on 10,000 yen, HoyaHoya and Fat City. Its still early days still but there are talks of playing a few shows in America in a few months and some shows confirmed for the next few months around the UK.

What Happened to Fidget House?

Fidget house, wobbly house, warping house. Call it what you want to call it, but one thing is clear; At the end of 2009 ‘fidget house’ as we knew it dissolved into the background of the blogosphere to be replaced by new styles of house music. DJ’s that were spinning the original fidget house sound adapted into different kinds of house music, and some people loved/hated this.

Personally, I was always a fan of fidget house since about 2008, however everything has to take its course, and 2009 saw some of the most innovative and new sounding music I’ve heard, which wouldn’t have existed if everybody was still stuck on a fidget tip.

Who was to blame?
No single person can be blamed for the significant change in the sound of fidget house music, but many things stood out to me:
• Many artists released some very innovative and diverse sounding house that was similar to, but wasn’t fidget. A prime example being: Boris Dlugschoch’s ‘Bangkok’.
• Zinc’s sound, dubbed ‘crack house’ became very popular. And Redlight also made the jump from DnB to House, both making music similar to, but not quite, fidget house.
• Jack Beats seemed to have created their own signature sound, and refused to call it fidget house.
• Major Lazer & Toddla T’s new reggae/dancehall sound.

It was clear that lots of artists were bored with fidget house, and created many paths branching into many different genres, some even creating their own new genre. Either way the decline of fidget house paved the way for fresh, new genres. And to me, two of them stood out…

Firstly, was the new ‘high rise’, ‘bleepy’ sounding house. Categorised by long rising synths that keep you on edge for ages until it drops into some mad syncopated bleeps.

If I was describing this genre to someone with no knowledge of music at all, I would simply show them “Stickin” by Sonic C:

Secondly, we have gypsy sounding house or “Gypsy House” made famous by Riva Starr. In particular his track “I was Drunk”. This kind of house sounds like you actually are drunk on a boat somewhere, with gypsy accordion synths to boot!:

You may agree or disagree, but this is my take on the two genres that fidget house fans and DJ’s have started to play and produce from the second half of 2009, as the original fidget house sound seemed to become less popular.

Meanwhile, however, the father of Fidget, as you may call him. Herve. Is still set on producing his original fidget house sound and has compiled his second mix album ‘Ghetto Bass 2’ which will be released next month.
One tune on there stood out to me which was created by Herve for the album, it is entitled ‘avenging angels’ and sounds bang on like the original fidget house that was huge in 2008. If you miss the sound of fidget, be sure to check it out!

Yet another fantastic remix form London wonder kid L-Vis 1990, this time using a surprising amout of vocals compared to his usual output. Standardly mind warping sub bass and space age synths make this one a banger, cop it in full glorious (legal) 320 right here.

This is taken from Roska’s self titled forthcoming album to be relased on Rinse Recordings at some point this year. UK Funky has blown up massive in the last 12 months, thanks mainly to producers like Roska leading it in the right direction. Massively looking forward to the album, but for now enjoy this fruity number.

25 minute mix covering my take on the best of the 00′s.. 2000-2010. I was asked to do a mix covering the last ten years of UK ‘urban/underground/black/whatever’ music for Toddla T who was filling in for Ras Kwame on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra. So its probably not as comprehensive as it could/should have been but I could easily have gotten super OCD and obsessive over this, trying to find old records and CD singles at my mums house etc etc.. but I didnt. this is what i did do. hope u like it.
